Her life began upon uncertain waters, beneath a promise made to a mother whose fate had already been claimed by the sea.

A child born from loss, uncertainty, and a promise made at sea.
Tovah is the daughter of Sorcha.
Sorcha had been lost at sea when pirates raided the ship upon which she travelled. They took her and the other captured goods aboard their own vessel before setting sail in search of further plunder.

Sorcha secured what protection she could for the child she carried.
Sorcha was a small, sensual woman with white hair. The pirates used her during the voyage, with the Captain being the last among them. No one knew which man had fathered the child she later carried.
Sorcha pleaded with the Captain to bring her child to her owner and gave him the man’s name. The Captain knew precisely who he was and gave his word that the child would be delivered to him untouched.

She entered the world aboard the vessel that carried her toward an unknown future.
Tovah was born with black hair and prism-coloured eyes. During her early life she was known as Nyx, although that name would eventually be changed.
She was taught the basics of service during the long years of travel. She also learned basic reading and writing, though her education was neither elaborate nor scholarly.

At twenty-one years of age, the Captain finally fulfilled his promise.
By the time the pirates made their way to Bjornar, Tovah was twenty-one years old. She arrived knowing the basics of service and carrying a trunk filled with her mother’s belongings.
The Captain’s word to Sorcha had at last been fulfilled. Tovah had been brought to the man her mother had named, untouched as promised.
There her former name was left behind, and the saga of Tovah began.
